Outsourced Business Development in 2026: Agency, New Hire, or Software

Three ways to get business development done: hire someone, pay an agency, or run software. They cost different amounts, they take different lengths of time to produce a first meeting, and they differ most in what you are left holding when they stop.

Here are the real numbers as of September 2026, and the questions that actually decide it.

The short answer

A hire costs about $92,000 a year and three months of ramp. An agency costs $3,500 to $12,000 a month, and the domains and data are often theirs, not yours. Software costs less than either, and the real question is whether it reaches the people you need or only the ones already in its database.

What a hire costs

A business development representative in the United States averages about $91,800 in total compensation, on a base around $59,000 to $69,000 plus commission. The range most postings sit in is $45,000 to $70,000 base, with top earners near $85,000.

Add the parts nobody puts in the plan: a data subscription, a sending tool, domains and mailboxes, a laptop, and a manager's time. Add three months before they are useful, and the risk that they leave in month seven with everything they learned.

What an agency costs

Most B2B lead generation agencies charge between $3,500 and $12,000 a month, with full multichannel programs running past $20,000. That is $42,000 to $144,000 a year. Paying by result instead, a qualified meeting typically runs $150 to $500 for small business targets, $300 to $900 for mid-market, and $800 to $2,500 or more for enterprise.

What a meeting should cost you

Whatever route you take, work out the cost per meeting and judge everything against it. Take the annual cost, divide by meetings that actually happened, and compare it to what one customer is worth. If a closed customer is worth $30,000 and meetings close at one in five, a $900 meeting is cheap and a $150 meeting from a list of the wrong people is expensive.

Mid-market $300 to $900
Small business $150 to $500

The question nobody asks until it is too late

When it ends, what do you keep? An agency arrangement usually runs on the agency's data subscriptions, the agency's sending domains and the agency's mailboxes. Cancel, and the pipeline stops the same week, because the machine was never yours. A hire takes their knowledge with them. Software that runs on your own domains and mailboxes leaves you with the list, the history and the sending reputation you paid to build.

Frequently asked questions

How much does outsourced business development cost in 2026?

Most B2B lead generation agencies charge $3,500 to $12,000 a month, and full multichannel programs run past $20,000. Paying per result, a qualified meeting commonly costs $150 to $500 for small business targets, $300 to $900 for mid-market and $800 to $2,500 or more for enterprise.

Is an agency cheaper than hiring a BD rep?

At the low end, yes. A business development representative averages about $91,800 in total compensation, which is more than an agency at $3,500 a month and less than one at $12,000. The bigger difference is what you keep: a hire builds knowledge inside your company, while an agency usually runs on its own domains, mailboxes and data.

What is a good cost per meeting?

Compare it to what a customer is worth. Take your annual spend, divide by meetings that actually happened, and check it against your average deal size and close rate. A $900 meeting with the right person beats a $150 meeting with the wrong one.

Do I keep the contact data if I stop?

With an agency, read the contract, because the data subscriptions and often the sending domains are theirs. With Omelo, the list, the history and the sending reputation are yours and stay yours.

How fast can outbound produce a first meeting?

An agency typically needs two to six weeks to onboard and build a list. A new hire needs weeks to start and about three months to ramp. Omelo can get you a first verified list in under 24 hours.
