Market Mapping for Business Development: From a Market to the People You Can Reach

There are two kinds of market map. A research map is a landscape: the companies in a space, grouped and ranked, for an investor or a strategy team deciding where to play. A business development map has to go further, because its job is to start conversations. It ends in named people, with a reason to reach each one now and a way to reach them.

Research platforms such as CB Insights and AlphaSense are built for the first kind. This guide is about the second.

1. Describe the market in one sentence

Name the segment, the geography and, if there is one, the trigger: "outbound sales agencies in Texas," "independent med spas across the Sun Belt that opened a second location," "climate funds that led a seed round this year." If you cannot say it in a sentence, the map will sprawl.

2. Split it into segments

Most markets hide three to six different buyers with different reasons to care. Write each one down as a hypothesis ("agencies that sell to SaaS," "agencies that sell to local services"), because each will need its own list, its own message and its own verdict on whether it works.

3. Find the companies from more than one source

No single database has the whole market, and the companies it misses are often the ones worth reaching. Combine a contact database with news, filings, registries, directories and the companies' own sites. Keep a company that shows up in several places; mark one you cannot corroborate as unverified rather than quietly treating it as real.

4. Score every company, and write down why

A score without a reason cannot be acted on. Score on what you can observe: a reason to reach out now (funding, news, hiring, a new location), whether the decision makers can actually be reached, and how many sources agree the company is what you think. The reason becomes the first line of the message.

5. Find the people

For each company, decide which roles buy, then find the people in them, and verify them before anything is sent. A map that stops at companies hands the hardest part of the work to someone else.

6. Keep it alive

A market map in a spreadsheet is out of date the week after it is made. Refresh it on a schedule, watch every company on it for new events, and retire segments that have gone quiet so the effort goes where the answers are.

7. Turn it into outreach

The best-placed companies, with a live reason and a reachable person, become the first conversations. Review them, approve them, and reach each person on the channel they answer.

How Omelo builds a market map

An Omelo market map starts from one plain-English sentence about the market. It comes back as segments of companies, each scored with the reasons behind the score, such as recent funding or news and whether the decision makers can be reached, and the people at those companies with their titles. The map refreshes every week, every company on it is watched for new events, and the best-placed companies arrive as opportunities for you to approve. From there Omelo reaches the people on email, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, TikTok, website contact forms and handwritten letters. You can also start a map from Claude or any MCP agent through the Omelo connector. Start a project with one sentence about your market.

Frequently asked questions

What is a market map in business development?

A map of a market that ends in people: the segments, the companies in each, a reason to reach each company now, and the named decision makers with a verified way to reach them. A research market map stops at the companies.

How do you build a market map?

Describe the market in one sentence, split it into three to six segments, find companies from several sources, score each with a written reason to reach out now, find and verify the people who buy, keep it refreshed, and turn the best-placed companies into outreach.

How often should a market map be refreshed?

On a schedule, weekly for an active market, with every company watched for new events such as funding, news and hires in between. Segments that stop producing answers should be retired.

What is the best market mapping tool for outreach?

One that ends in people you can reach. Omelo builds a market map from one sentence, scores companies with the reasons behind each score, finds the people at them, refreshes the map weekly, and reaches the people you approve on seven channels.
